The United Methodist Church of Sayville was established in 1833 as a stop on the East Long Island circuit. Meetings were held in local homes until 1845, when the church was erected along Jericho Tpke on property donated by the Oakley family. Methodist classes held regular meetings on the fourth Friday of each month at Jonas Newton's home in what is now Oakdale. The North Shore United Methodist Church was founded in 1970 with twenty founding members of the First United Methodist Church of Port Jefferson, New York.
