Anna Jarvis initiated the modern American version of Mother's Day in the early 20th century by organizing a worship and celebration service at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which today serves as an International Mother's Day Shrine. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson declared Mother's Day, celebrated on the second Sunday of May, as a national holiday in honor of mothers.
