The Ministry of Lay Servants is a United Methodist system for lay leadership development. The courses are designed to help UMC members develop their skills in order to serve as lay leaders in their local churches. Research has shown that older adults who hold lay leadership positions in their religious groups experience slower average rates of functional decline, compared to those who do not attend church regularly and those who attend regularly but are not leaders. It appears that regular attendance and leadership have an important cross-cutting association, since both leaders and attendees who attended church regularly showed lower average levels of disability than irregular attendees.
